This
article will try to answer the question if it
is
possible to lower your Garlic
and cholesterol levels by
eating.
There have
been quite a few scientific debates if garlic and
cholesterol levels are effective or not. Let’s have a closer
look at the scientific side of the
question.
It is true
that in people with garlic and cholesterol levels help to
lower it by 10 to 20 percent. There have been a growing
number of tests and studies proving that garlic can lower
and control hdl and ldl cholesterol.
The
results of these studies are the following:
A study in
which 220 patients were involved the garlic group took 800
milligrams of powdered garlic for a period of four months.
These patients had 12 percent drop in garlic and cholesterol
levels and 17 percent decrease in triglycerides. The group
who took placebo instead of garlic didn't have any
significant change.
In Germany
garlic is a licensed medicine for atherosclerosis. The
Munich University made a research on garlic. Patients were
put on a low fat diet and their cholesterol was decreased
with 10 percent. When garlic was added, the cholesterol
dropped another 10 percent.
There have
been over a dozen studies with stable results proving that
with garlic you can lower your garlic and cholesterol levels
from 10 to 20 percent.
In one
study, 800 milligrams of dried garlic have been given to a
number of people ( about 261) received for a period of 16
weeks (this equals a small clove of fresh garlic). The
results were positive - drop of 10 percent in
cholesterol.
It is good
to note that in the studies mentioned above it has been used
a measure dose of standardized garlic powder because raw
garlic often varies widely in
concentration.
It is true
that raw garlic can have as much as 13 times allicin as the
next, thus experiments with raw garlic lead to not
consistent results.
However,
in the garlic powder the allicin concentration is standard
and this is why it is recommendable to take a garlic tablet
made by a cool-dried process rather than raw garlic. Such
tablets preserve the active garlic ingredients and contain
500 milligrams of garlic each.
In America
over 66 percent of the population has cholesterol above the
optimal level. Even thought the garlic and cholesterol
levels might not be as high for the doctor to prescribe a
cholesterol medication, it is high enough to make people
concern.
In case
you need some more specific information, here it is. In case
your total garlic and cholesterol levels are below 200 mg/ml
you are healthy.
If you are
between 200 and 239 mg/ml you are considered at risk, though
the garlic and cholesterol levels are not dangerously
high.
Why not
consider dropping your garlic and cholesterol levels by
taking some supplements which have been clinically tested to
lower cholesterol. Quality garlic supplement is one of the
many options you have.
